Dining experience – Plat Principal
Project type
Experience Design
Date
July 2024
Location
Massey University, Wellington
Plat Principal 2024 is a spatial design project investigating the rituals and social codes surrounding shared meals, framed through the lens of fashion and identity. Developed as a collaborative work, the project formed the main course of a curated dining experience set within an immersive digital environment. Sound, lighting, and projection were used to construct a cyclical narrative inspired by seasonal fashion collections.
As diners progress through the experience, evolving table settings, garnishes, cutlery, and dishes are introduced, creating an abundance of seasonal choices. These cycles reflect the rapid turnover and ephemerality of fashion trends. Deliberately impractical cutlery challenges the act of eating, referencing the inaccessibility and performative nature of haute couture. In the final sequence, the table is reframed as a runway, transforming both diners and setting into a living exhibition. The project positions food, fashion, and spatial design as parallel forms of self-expression and cultural commentary.
