The Unglued – Inspired by Hannah Höch

Project type

Adaptive reuse

Date

October 2024

Location

Wellington

The Unglued proposal repurposes the Morrisons’ Building as a creative studio space inspired by the work of Hannah Höch, a pioneer of the Dada Art movement who meticulously cut and rearranged various media to assemble dynamic, layered photomontage compositions.

The ground floor, known as “The Glued,” serves as the final showcase space, featuring an exhibition of Höch’s work amidst a captivating environment adorned with laminated timber.

The upper floors offer a public workshop space called “The Unglued,” signifying the unfinalised work. Multi-program workshop stations feature across a double-floor atrium and mezzanine, made from repurposed scaffolding materials to evoke a sense of impermanence and creativity. The Unglued offers the public opportunities to create and share their own photomontages using the projector room’s overhead camera. A largescale “spatialised montage” installation allows people to walk between the layers of Höch’s photomontage, whilst a pulley system can lift the installation to provide a larger space for gatherings on the first floor.
